At this time of the year children everywhere are writing their Christmas lists and are hoping that Santa will leave that special toy for them under the tree on Christmas morning. We can all remember the excitement and anticipation, of wishing for a new bicycle, the latest doll with all the accessories or that must have gadget. We can also remember the look of sheer delight and smiles on children’s faces when they open their presents and the fun and enjoyment that special gift gives them.
But for families who have a child with a brain condition it’s not that easy or straightforward. Often the cost of giving their child the things that will bring enjoyment, fun and pleasure is too much for them to afford. Gifts that are suitable for children with additional needs to be able to use, or enjoy safely, can cost as much as ten times the price of a regular item. A standard bicycle costs around £200, but for a specially adapted tricycle the price rises to as much as £2500. Remember sledging when the snow came? A conventional sledge can be bought on the high street for £20. For a sledge safe enough to carry a child with disabilities the price tag is £250.
We wanted to share with you the touching Christmas wishes of Lily , a lively, cheerful and caring eight year old girl who is devoted to her big sister, Annie-May. Annie-May was born with massive brain damage. She cannot walk, is non-verbal and requires around the clock care. Her future is uncertain but her family focus on enjoying each and every day, especially Christmas, and attempt to lead as normal a life as possible.
At Cerebra we believe in giving families who have children with brain conditions the chance to find a better life together, not just at Christmas but all through the year. By making a donation to our Christmas Appeal you can make a difference to a child’s life and help families find and afford those expensive items that will mean so much to their child.
Your donation will help fund our Innovation Centre who design and produce unique equipment for disabled children, adapting existing products or designing new, bespoke items. It will help fund our Grant Scheme which gives parents much needed help towards affording equipment and services to help make life easier and more enjoyable, giving disabled children the same opportunities for independence and an ordinary life.
We will be able to grant Lily’s wish this Christmas and the family will enjoy a special day together. Your support will mean that we can help more children like Annie-May who need costly, specially made or adapted equipment.
With your help we can create special moments for lots more children like Annie-May and Lily. Please make a donation to our Christmas Appeal today and help put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas.
