A guide for parents

This guide is for parents of children with special educational needs and parents of disabled children in England who want to know how to get help for their child at school. It only applies to Wales and we have written a separate guide for England.

SEN reform process in Wales

Please be aware that some changes brought in by the SEN reform process in Wales will come into force from September 2021. We will be producing an updated guide explaining the new system in due course. In the meantime, this guide remains accurate for children who currently have special educational provision via a statement or are either waiting for or are in the process of a SEN assessment until such time as they transfer to the new system.

In September 2022, the Welsh Government issued two guides for parents and carers on the new additional learning needs system and its phased introduction:  A guide for parents about rights under the additional learning needs (ALN) system and Implementing the additional learning needs system between September 2021 and August 2024: a guide for parents and families.

This guide is currently under review.
